TFE Clones: where would the world be without them?

Currently, I know of the following places running various TFE-based MUDs:

  • TFE Classic Part 2 [theforestsedge.com:4000]
Taking over from where Severus left off, TFE Classic Part 2 currently is where the majority of TFE players are located. I haven't been informed of their plans yet, however I imagine they will try to remain 'true' to the TFE name that was forged by Greyclaw and continued by Severus.

  • Mystic Legends [ml.mudhost.com:2001]
Meridia is a new world, and with it comes lots of new races, classes, skills and spells. Though retaining some TFE areas by Florian and Fenlyn, they have been completely redone. Expect a challanging quest-filled gaming experience full of the puzzles Florian is so reknowned for. If I wasn't tied up with my own projects, I'd probably be playing here... worth a look into at the very least :)

  • The Eternal Forest [tefmud.net:9000]
TEF stands proud as the longest running clone to survive the 'clone war'. They, like many, have promised never to close or pwipe, but unlike the many they have been true to their word even through several shifts in management. They have added many new things to the game including heaps of new areas, a larger number of levels (more than the traditional 90), coloured titles, socials on ooc, and quest points to level.

Know of a TFE clone not listed here? Submit it to the list.

And in memory of the clones that are no longer with us.

  • Legacy's Dawning [closed]
Legacy's Dawning is a TFE dirivitive that strives to reach new levels of sophistication. We are not limiting ourselves to the standard TFE offering, but instead focussing on bringing new content and gameplay for a TFE of the future. Among our current achievements, we have three new classes (sorceror's, blade dancers, and druids) and a second continent full of areas to explore. We're not stopping there, however, with plans already underway to rework all the old classes, make a more fluid combat and spell system, and add 'nightmare' content for level 80+ characters to give them another 100 levels or more of play. While far from our final destination, this is the beginning of a new era in mudding. The dawn of a legacy.

  • TFE Classic [closed]
TFE Classic is a clone whose objective is to remain 'true' to the vision of Greyclaw's original design whilst progressing the game forward. They have a new class, several new areas, and some of the old players as immortals. As with all clones, there are differences, however people have found refuge here too. TFE Classic is one of the three main clones that I know of (Eternal Forest and Legacy's Dawning being the other two).

  • Beyond the Forest's Edge [closed]
After giving the base TFE Classic code to Odix who is running TFE Classic Part 2, Severus has continued developing the TFE engine into this new incarnation "Beyond the Forest's Edge". New features include a druid class and vehicles.

  • aff.MUD [closed]
aff.MUD started out on a modified TRE codebase (so 120 levels, similar to TEF), and started doing some serious redeveloping (adding new races, classes, etc). They initially opened in the playtesting phase with things like 100d100 weapons for newbies. Now I think they're more open to serious playing and these weapons have been phased out. Wouldn't mind some updated info from the developers if they wanna email me :)

  • Dynasty [closed]
Dynasty is a new mud in development, they're building a whole new downtoned fantasy/faerie tale world, including a classless levelling system. Right now, they're looking for builders - so if you're that way inclined, why not drop by? :)

  • Ideas of the Forest [closed]
Aerle has taken Sordith's stable mud engine and started doing some neat stuff to it... "We're planning on opening for play testing within a month and I'll give you the details on what we're going to be doing then. Should be a lot of different stuff including over 20 classes with a tier based (prerequisite) system as well as some classless skills. Still kicking some ideas around though and trying them out and will be trying them out as we playtest."

  • The Forests's Fury [closed]
A full pkill TFE clone. Nobody was there to answer my questions about the MUD but I got this off one of their noteboards: "This is basically stock TFE with full player killing and a couple of other changes. Take it easy, and kill 'em all."

  • Summers of Faldyor [closed]
Creslin says he's "rewriting the whole thing" and "creating a whole new look TFE". However I haven't heard anything about it in over a year, so it's probably been abandoned... please correct me if I'm wrong :)

  • The Forest's Heart [closed]
A totally new world, with new code ideas and concepts. Unfortunately now retired.

  • The Port [closed]
Run by Janua and Lyon, totally new world and game design, looks very professional. Unfortunately it looks very closed now too :(

DIY TFE! I have created an all-in-one TFE "megapack" which contains the following codebases:

  • TFE 1.0: TFE as released by Greyclaw. Includes the original, unmodified source code plus two quickly fixed up versions which should compile under Windows (MS Visual C++ 6.0) and Linux (egcs-2.91.66). This distribution is not for the faint of heart as it has MANY bugs that need fixing.
  • TFE 2.1: A fixed-up version of TFE (not sure by who) that is probably a good starting point for a 'original-style' clone without having to do the low level bug fixing that you would have to do with TFE 1.0. I believe that TFE-Classic was founded on this codebase. No provision for Windows, however.
  • TFE Classic Starter Kit (1.0): When Severus shut down Classic he released this codebase (with no mobs/areas/etc). It would probably make an excellent codebase to start building your own clone on top of. Again, no provision for Windows compatibility for the casual starter, but may provide some useful snippits and interesting reading for existing clones.
  • TFE Eternal/SOF: Apparently this is the Eternal / SOF Version of TFE before the two MUD's split. No idea what condition the code is in, or even if it compiles... but figured it might as well be listed.
  • Crimson Rain's TFE: Not entirely sure the history behind this one.
  • River's Edge TFE: The parent TFE clone to most of the engines out there today. Many bugfixes and new features including the channel-socials you are used to today.
  • The Forests Heart: The Forests Heart codebase, dated 28 September 1999.
  • The Lyon's Den: Lyon's Den code, probably fairly old but I'm not sure how old.

Click here to download it! (9,402,564 bytes).

The archive is in 7-zip format. You can download a 7z extracter here.

Note: I do not provide support for this download! If you are going to code your own MUD you're on your own! I don't have time to help the hoardes of people who ask.

Greyclaw has updated me on the TFE-tree, he wrote most of the code, however used Merc as a reference:

And everyone else who's been left out... if you feel like your name should be here: email me.
